- It often occurs for unknown reasons, but it may be linked to certain diseases affecting the body such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, ankylosing spondylitis and other collagen vascular disorders.
- It can follow an injury or surgery to the eye.
- It can follow an acute, chronic or relapsing course.
